Electronic Moisture Meters on Concrete Slabs
Installation of an MFMA flooring system should not commence until
the subfloor is determined to be "dry" by industry standard
testing procedures. MFMA does not recommend installation
of any maple flooring system over a newly installed concrete slab
within 60 days
of pour. Concrete slab drying time is affected by the
type of construction, concrete formulation, location of the building
and climatic conditions.
Vapor barriers or under-slab membranes will likely
increase slab drying times.
Electronic moisture meters measure content
of moisture in a concrete
slab, most commonly in terms of percentages. Most
electronic moisture meters take readings from the surface,
while some probe into
the slab.
The moisture content of a slab indicates the degree
of saturation, but not the vapor emission rate that
is occurring. The MFMA recommends
tests that indicate the quantity of moisture passing
through a concrete slab, and for this reason does
not recommend using electronic moisture
meters. The MFMA recommendation for moisture passing
through a slab is 4.5 lbs. or less of vapor emission
per 1000 sq. ft. during a 24-hour
period.
